All individual and group chats on WhatsApp are protected with end-to-end encryption but the same is not true for cloud-based backups. This is exactly what the company is aiming to change with its newly spotted feature. WhatsApp has reportedly started testing password-protected and encrypted cloud storage backups for Android and iOS devices.
This new under-development feature was first spotted and shared by WABetaInfo. The leak shows a bunch of screenshots detailing how this feature would work. It seems like the new feature will be called "Password Protect Backups" which is self-explanatory. It starts off by asking users to set a password for cloud storage backups that will be stored in the future.
As previously announced, @WhatsApp is working on cloud backups encryption.
The chat database and media will be safe from unauthorized access when using a password. The password is private and it's not sent to WhatsApp.
It will be available in a future build for iOS and Android. pic.twitter.com/Lp06PaECBXClick here to read more
