Samsung Galaxy S8 software support ends after four years - Android

Samsung has officially ended software support for the Galaxy S8 series. These include the standard Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus but if you own Galaxy S8 Lite or Galaxy S8 Active, these two will continue receiving updates for the time being. The lineup debuted during the Galaxy Unpacked event of 2017 and is one of the rare ones that kept receiving software support for so long.

The company did not make any formal announcement about the decision. It simply removed the name of the two flagship smartphones from the official software support page. This page features lists of Galaxy devices eligible for receiving software updates along with the frequency. These two phones were part of the bi-annual list where they used to receive a new update within a period of six months.

It should be noted that Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus launched with Android 7.0 Nougat and received two major Android OS upgrades. Additionally, they have received regular monthly security patches but going forward, no new software updates will be released for the two phones. Most recently, they were updated to the April 2021 security patch by the team.
