Sony has announced the release of the first major PlayStation 5 software update. It is simply referred to as "PS5 April Update" and brings a few noticeable changes. The biggest one is support for external storage devices so that you can have more games available for you to play straight away. This feature was first reported about a couple of months ago and is here now.
But before you get too excited, we would like to make it clear that PlayStation 5 April Update only allows moving games from the console's internal storage to the external storage. It does not let you install and play games directly from the external device. Sony says this limitation is because PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra-high-speed SSD. This is also the reason you will not be able to download games to your USB storage device either.
The process will be to download your desired PS5 game to the console's storage and then move it to the connected external storage device. Now whenever you feel like playing it, you will need to transfer it back to the console's storage. Sony says "it is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc."
