The Indian government has proposed a new way to track each and every WhatsApp message in the country without breaking the encryption tech. It has asked the popular instant messaging app maker to tag each message with an alphanumeric hash that will work as a unique identifier. This will be done for each message that gets sent through the application.
Whenever there will be activity against the law, the authorities will be able to trace the message's origin using the hash associated with it. This is a theoretical overview of the proposed idea but WhatsApp is yet to comment. It is up to the company whether it would like to give it a go or avoid using it altogether.
One of the government officials has been quoted as saying, "The government is willing to work with WhatsApp to come up with a solution to enable traceability of message originators without breaking encryption".
