IBM says it has created world's first 2nm chip technology - Android

It can fit up to 50 billion transistors on a fingernail-sized chip.

IBM has announced that it has created the world's first 2-nanometer chip technology. It is said to be helpful for the whole semiconductor industry as the tech will power a wide range of devices including smartphones, autonomous vehicles, and laptops among others. In other words, any gadget that relies on a chipset for performance should be able to make use of this new tech.

The new 2nm chip tech is claimed to deliver up to 45% faster performance and up to 75% better battery efficiency as compared to most 7nm chips. It will allow a fingernail-sized chip to have up to 50 billion transistors fitted on it. This results in about 333 million transistors per square millimeter (MTr/mm2). This is significantly huge as TSMC's 5nm chips have about 173 MTr/mm2 and Samsung's 5nm chips have approximately 127 MTr/mm2.

IBM says that its 2nm chip technology can help smartphones achieve a battery life of up to four days. It can also be helpful in reducing the carbon footprint of data centers, increasing the speed of laptop performance, and helping with faster object detection and reaction times for autonomous vehicles.
