  • Netflix will have a free weekend promotion in India called the StreamFest.
  • This will see the firm’s library opened up to users in India for 48 hours.

Update: November 20, 2020 (12:56 AM ET): Netflix has announced the details of its upcoming free streaming promotion in India. The platform will allow people to stream TV shows and movies without having to pay anything starting 12:01 AM IST on December 5 until 11:59 PM IST on December 6.

People in India can visit Netflix’s StreamFest website (or download the Android app), sign up, and start streaming. Streamers won’t need to enter any credit or debit card details to access the free promotion.

Anyone who signs in during the Netflix StreamFest will get one stream in standard definition so no one else can use the same login information to stream. However, once you sign up, you can stream Netflix on any device of your choice where the app is available.

Netflix says it’ll limit the number of StreamFest viewers. So if you see a message saying “StreamFest is at capacity,” don’t worry. The service will let you know when you can start streaming.

Original article: October 21, 2020 (07:09 AM ET): Netflix currently offers a few movies and TV shows for free in order to entice more people to become subscribers, but now the company is planning to offer its entire catalog for free for a limited time.

The company confirmed its intention to launch a 48-hour StreamFest event in India, opening up its entire library of content to free users for a weekend.

Netflix chief operating officer and chief product officer Greg Peters explained the move during the Q3 earnings call:

And so an idea that we’re excited about, and we’ll see how it goes, but we think that giving everyone in a country access to Netflix for free for a weekend could be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing stories that we have, the service, how the service works, really create an event and hopefully get a bunch of those folks to sign up. So we’re going to try that in India, and we’ll see how that goes.

The plan comes after Protocol and XDA‘s Mishaal Rahman reported references to a 48-hour “StreamFest” event from December 4 in the latest version of the Netflix Android app.

Text strings found in the app note that you won’t need to enter credit card information to take part in the event, so you don’t need to worry about getting charged after the promotion. Unfortunately, a text string referring to StreamFest being “at capacity” suggests that this is limited to a certain number of people. But hopefully the threshold is still pretty high.
