Google is long-rumored to be working on a custom chipset for its lineup of Pixel smartphones and Chromebooks. A fresh report from 9to5Google has emerged detailing further information about the development plans. It reveals that the upcoming Pixel 6 will be the first Google smartphone to feature the custom chipset.
The custom processor is reportedly called Google GS101 and with the internal codename "Whitechapel". It has been designed in collaboration with Samsung which is well-known for its own Exynos series of processors. The release will make it the newest OEM on the block to have its own processors and thus reducing its dependency on Qualcomm Snapdragon silicon.
The GS101 is based on Samsung's 5nm manufacturing process. It is said to have a tri-cluster CPU architecture, a TPU, and an integrated security chip. There are likely to be dual Cortex-A78 cores, dual Cortex-A76 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores. It will have a 20-core ARM Mali GPU meant for handling graphics-intensive processes including games. It will undoubtedly be a flagship processor for the high-end device.
