Apple fined $2M in Brazil for shipping iPhone 12 without chargers - Android

Appel still has the chance to appeal the ban if it wants to.

Apple has been fined $2 million by Procon-SP, the consumer protection agency in Brazil's Sao Paulo. The fine has been imposed for failing to ship iPhone 12 units without chargers along with a couple of other claims. These include misleading advertising and problems faced by users after installing iOS updates.

The move to ditch the charger in the retail box was announced during the iPhone 12 launch event last year. It said that the decision would be beneficial for the environment as it would result in reduced packaging size, earth mining, and CO2 emissions. These are the same reasons it gave when Procon-SP asked the company to explain the decision late last year. The authority was not convinced with the explanation and said that ditching chargers and not reducing the phone's cost is a violation of the rights of Brazilian customers.

The misleading advertisement issue is related to Apple's water-resistance claims during the iPhone commercials. It is reported that the company declined servicing devices affected by water damage even though it marketed the ability to withstand water. The last part of the issue is related to problems users faced after the iOS update installation and Apple failed to fix them as well.
