Spotify has been offering voice search support to premium users for quite some time but since last year, we started to hear about it working on a hands-free experience. It was spotted developing the "Hey Spotify" hotword and now, it seems like the feature has started to roll out a little more widely as GSMArena folks have now received it.
The team got to know about the availability of the feature through an app notification received on the Samsung Galaxy S21 unit. Tapping on it took them to a tour of the feature explaining how it works and what it could be used for. "Hey Spotify" works exactly the same way as other popular hot words like "Hey Google" and "Hey Siri" work.
It should be noted that Spotify is not working on a fully-fledged digital assistant. The hot word simply builds upon the existing voice search system and makes it more convenient to use. Another thing to keep in mind is that 'Hey Spotify' will work only if both the device's screen and the Spotify app are open. It is said that the team stores a copy of your voice recordings but it starts doing so only for things said after the hot word is used.
