Instant messaging service WhatsApp could soon roll out an update that brings ‘dark mode’ to the app. The information comes via WABetaInfo, a popular specialist blog that covers new features and information on WhatsApp. Dark mode will allow users to set a dark theme for the app on their smartphones, similar to what apps such as Telegram and YouTube currently offer.
The advantages of dark mode can be seen in battery life on the phone, especially if you use WhatsApp a lot. Darker colors on screen are easier to power, and therefore users with a lot of WhatsApp usage will see a difference in battery life on dark mode. Apart from this, a dark theme will be easier on the eyes and will be better tuned to dark themes on smartphones. Currently, WhatsApp uses a default white background on both iOS and Android.
Dark mode will be coming to both platforms soon, but there is no firm timeline on this. The feature is believed to be in development and initially, it could roll out to beta users on both platforms. Many new features are initially released on the WhatsApp beta for Android and tested with a closed group of users, before eventually making their way to the stable version for all.
Facebook-owned WhatsApp is known to keep adding new features and tweaks that improve the app and service continuously. Earlier this year, WhatsApp rolled out group video calling, and recently also introduced continuous voice message playback. Apart from sending text messages to both individuals and groups, WhatsApp also allows voice calls, video calls and more on its platform.
